At what age can my son/daughter get their permit?

Teenage drivers can start taking driver's education courses at 14½, but they can't receive their driver's permit until they turn 15. 

Teen drivers between the ages of 15 and 15 ½ may apply for a Driver’s Education Permit, but only if they have completed a state-approved Driver’s Ed course from a local driving institute and passed the DMV required tests.

What do we need to take to the DMV to get a permit?
Submit two forms of identification, and come prepared with the following documents:
  • State Certified Birth Certificate or Valid Passport
  • United States Certificate of Birth Abroad
  • Provide your Social Security Card
  • Supply proof of Colorado residence address: (utlility bill)
  • Pass all required examinations (physical, vision, written, driving test)

How long does the Home Study Course take?

The Home Study is a work at your own pace class. If you go by the guidelines for the course, it should take about 21 days to complete.

It depends on how much time you want to spend a day on the course and how fast you learn.

How long do they carry their permit?

How far apart do the drive times need to be set up?

The first drive time is done after they have been driving with parents or guardians for 10 to 15 hours. The second and third drive times need to be completed before the end of the contractual agreement.
